The Painted Word

Working under the theme The Painted Word, I create portraits of iconic cultural figures that exist at the intersection of image, memory, and language. Each painting is more than a likeness; it is a conversation between the subject and the words that surround them. Drawing from song lyrics, poetry, literature, and spoken fragments, I layer text into the surface of the work, using language as both texture and narrative.

The choice of quotation is central to each piece. Sometimes the words echo the subject’s public persona, other times they reveal vulnerability, contradiction or cultural resonance beneath the familiar image. By pairing portraiture with language, I invite viewers to engage with the emotional and symbolic dimensions of fame, identity, and collective memory.
